John,

I have used Growl in the past to send messages from my server to my main client over LAN. It worked fine. I used it for some watched folders stuff.

Remember, if you're using firewalls, to open up: TCP port 23052 and UDP port 9887.

Maybe the communication is being blocked somewhere?
