If you'd like to download the package use this link: http://www.maxumdev.com/Rumpus7.zip More additions are expected, but I'd love to get feedback now on some of the major updates to SSL processing, Open Directory integration, and the new Folder Triggers functionality. If you are one of the first 3 or 4 people to download and try the new software, please send a quick post to the list, letting us know how the update performs. John Here are the major updates included in this Beta: SSL --- Secure services, including HTTPS, Implicit FTPS and FTPS with TLS/SSL, are now integrated into Rumpus. Stunnel is gone, and simple "turn it on" checkboxes are now used to enable these services. Secure services are simpler, easier to manage, more reliable, and avoid some of the little problems like client IP address tracking that were present in previous releases of Rumpus. Open Directory -------------- There is a new Open Directory test lookup function, Rumpus can retrieve user e-mail addresses (so File Requests and Drop Shipments work as expected) and different privileges and Rumpus options can be applied to different OD users, by group. Folder Triggers --------------- For those that have asked for a way to execute an Event Notice based on the folder the file is transferred into or out of, Rumpus 7 supports "Folder Triggers". Guest Transfer Tracking ----------------------- The Activity window now includes a display for Drop Shipped files and File Requests, so you can see what transfers are pending, when they'll expire, etc. Misc. ----- Tweaks to the WFM interface have been made, the DNS name of clients can now be displayed in Event Notices, you can now be notified of user log ins, log outs, when hard drive space runs low, or when new user accounts are created via the Web admin interface. Also, the overall interface has been simplified and made more logical (for example, there is now just 1 tab of menu options for setup/control windows). The update went flawlessly; the only thing that I had to do was enable SSL on the web service, as my certs had already been converted over. If there's an easy way to check during the upgrade to see if SSL is active in v6 (via stunnel) and just automatically turn it on in v7, that would probably be nice, to avoid the extra step and the possibility of forgetting to do it. The new GUI is more logical and easier to navigate, a nice upgrade. It's wonderful to see real IP addresses in the WFM log now that stunnel is gone: as an SSL-only site, that was very important to us. The only glitch that I ran across so far was that the check-for-updates feature sees v6 as an update, when it's obviously not. A couple of suggestions: * Please give us the ability to turn normal, unsecure FTP off. Everything on my server is HIPAA/FERPA stuff, and it can never be accessed without being encrypted, so normal FTP will never, ever be used (just as normal HTTP will never be used). I understand that I can block it via a firewall, but I just went into OS X Client's firewall and it's messy because Rumba is not a normal app. I guess I could go find the daemon app and make firewall settings for that, or find a third-party firewall GUI that lets me do more, etc, but it would be far simpler and a massive timesaver if there was either 1) a way to just disable normal FTP altogether or 2) redirect normal FTP to secure FTP automatically (just as you already do with HTTP to HTTPS) right in the Rumpus GUI. * I notice a lot of the usual junk hammering on the web server (scripted exploit attempts for PHP, MySQLAdmin, etc). It would be cool to have an automatic feature where any IP that requests X number of bad URLs could get automatically added to the "Unruly IPs" list (love that term, BTW). A Rumpus server should almost never get bad URLs, I would think, so that would be a great way of slamming the door on that kind of thing after a few attempts. You might want to offer a list of excluded bad attempts that lots of browsers make, such as favicon.ico attempts, that wouldn't be counted toward slamming the door. I'm also looking forward to the fix for large web downloads where the server is zipping the file in the background, but the user is not notified. When I tried accessing "Rumpus 7" on the server from another copy of "Rumpus 7" running on a remote Mac, I noticed that some of the settings appear different then they did from the "Rumpus 7" application on the server itself. Suppose I set the address to serve on to one of my internal addresses on my network (192.168.0.2.) Fortunately, there's an easy work around... My guess is that you have no entries in the "Blocked Clients" list. When the blocked list is completely empty, Rumpus assumes no one should be blocked. This is incorrect, of course, when the "Allow Only 'Allowed Clients'" option is on. I'll fix this for the next release, but in the mean time, just add any entry to the Blocked Clients list, such as "1.1.1.1". If that doesn't take care of the problem, let me know directly at "support at maxum.com ". And again, I'll be sure to get this fixed in the next build. Thanks for the report! Right... That'll get addressed before the release of version 7. > * Please give us the ability to turn normal, unsecure FTP off. OK, this will be in the next release. It's a bit tricky, because FTPS with TLS/SSL starts as a standard FTP connection, so the server still has to accept standard FTP if FTPS is enabled. Hopefully, though, it'll be possible to enforce the switch to SSL encryption before allowing the user to login. > * It would be cool to have an automatic feature where any IP that > requests X number of bad URLs could get automatically added to the > "Unruly IPs" list (love that term, BTW). This is the intention of the "Hack Attempt Recognition" function, of course, but that feature checks only for login attempts. I'll look into having bad URL accesses added to the "failed access" tracking, so that garbage URLs trigger the block function, too. > I'm also looking forward to the fix for large web downloads where > the server is zipping the file in the background, but the user is > not notified. This refers to multi-file downloads, I assume. When users download a folder (forcing Rumpus to create a zip file), they do get a "please be patient" message. I'll look into extending this functionality to multi-file downloads, too. Thanks for the feedback! John
